John T. Baker / Woods

Once I got Little Rock Songs out of the way, I bought a new recorder. It was a digital 8 track recorder and it offered lots of features that I hadn’t been able to use with my 4 track. Namely, lots of tracks to record vocals, guitars, more vocals and more guitars. And some more vocals. When you overdub on analog tape, each time you do it, you add a layer of tape hiss and if you do it enough, it becomes a big hissy mess (great album title, by the way!). But when you overdub (or bounce, to use the correct terminology) in the digital realm, there’s no hiss. So you can really lay things on thick. Woods, was the first thing I recorded on my new 8 track recorder and it is a big sonic improvement over the 4 track stuff. Plus, I also bought a CD burner, so I had my own little cottage industry wherein I could write, record, mix and produce my own CD’s at home. It was a big deal at the time.
